Competition / Cardio Class

Class Overview:
The competition / cardio judo class will focus on training for competition and intense cardio exercise.   There will be much less demonstration in this class and a lot more active exercises, practice, drilling and sparring.  This class is recommended for advanced judokas that have mastered falling ways.  The class is not recommended for judokas with injuries and our goal is to not create any new ones.

Class Guidelines:
  • Make sure fingernails and toenails are cut short and that judoka and gi are clean.  A cup is recommended for all men.
  • Inform sensei and partners of any injuries.
  • This will be a highly active class - bring plenty of water and let sensei know if you are feeling lightheaded.
  • Class is recommended for green belt and higher judokas and kids 13 and older (please see sensei for exceptions).
  • Please use the restrooms and get water before class starts or during break only.
  • We will be building up to full shia (tournament level) sparring over several weeks.  Randori sparring should be done safely and at 50-80% effort.
  • To avoid injuries, we will be working on advanced falling techniques and encouraging judokas to take falls rather than getting injured by avoiding them.   You will get thrown a lot and you will be throwing people a lot - you'll learn from both.
  • You should be practicing falling ways and shadow uchi komis on your own - get a small mat.
Class Plan:
Each week we will focus on a different set of techniques including:
  • Attacks to rear: (o ouchi gari, ko ouchi gari, o soto gari, ko soto gari, ko soto gaki, tani otoshi)
  • Leg techniques: (sasae, hiza guruma, de ashi harai, okuri ashi harai, uchi mata, ko soto gari)
  • Hip techniques: (ippon seonage, koshi guruma, o goshi, harai goshi, hane goshi, uki goshi)
  • Arm and hand techniques: (tai otoshi, sodi tsuri komi goshi, sode makekomi, tsuri komi goshi, ippon seonage)
  • Sacrifices: (tomoe nage, yoko tomoe nage, sumo gaeshi, uki waza, ura nage, yoko gake, yoko guruma, tani otoshi)
